Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and acid salts that stick together in concentrated urine. They can be painful when passing through the urinary.

About Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are one of the most painful medical conditions. The causes of kidney stones vary according to the type of stone. Not all kidney stones are made up of the same crystals. The greatest risk factor for kidney stones is making less than one liter of urine per day. This is why kidney stones are common in premature infants who have kidney problems. However, kidney stones are most likely to occur in people between the ages of 20 and 50.

Kidney stones have many causes and can affect any part of your urinary tract from your kidneys to your bladder. Often, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together.

Kidney Stone Disease Symptoms

A kidney stone may not cause symptoms until it moves around within your kidney or passes into your ureter — the tube connecting the kidney and bladder. At that point, you may experience these signs and symptoms:

  • Severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs
  • Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin
  • Pain that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity
  • Pain on urination
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and chills if an infection is present
  • Urinating more often than usual

Kidney Stone Treatment

Treatment depends on the type of stone, how bad it is and the length of time you have had symptoms. There are different treatments to choose from. It is important to talk to your health care provider about what is best for you.

  • Medication
  • Lesar Therapy
  • Shock Wave Therapy
  • Ureteroscopy
  • Surgery to remove very large stones in the kidney
  • Using a scope to remove stones
  • Parathyroid gland surgery
